IT chiefs warn of cyber-terrorism threat

The threat of cyber-terrorism is growing and most countries are vulnerable to attacks that can shut down critical infrastructure, global experts told a conference here Tuesday.

"The hard reality is that (information technology) has become a tool for cybercrime and cyberterrorism," said Hamadoun Toure from the United Nations' International Telecommunications Union.

"Cybersecurity must be the cornerstone of every aspect of keeping ourselves, our countries and our world safe," he told the conference, which the Malaysian hosts are billing as the first on cyber-terrorism and security.

US holds largest ever simulated cyber-attack exercise

US officials said Thursday that "real and growing" threats to US computer and telecommunications networks were behind the holding of the largest-ever cyber-security exercises this week.

Computer security experts from five countries, more than 40 private sector companies, and numerous government and state agencies are spending a week fielding simulated "real-world," on-line attacks on the computer systems of government bodies, corporations, transportation and other key industries.

Interpol Calls For Global Effort To Battle Cybercrime

Interpol's Secretary General says the private sector needs to become much more involved in law enforcement investigations to give police the edge they need.

Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble this week called for the creation of an integrated cybercrime investigative to combat the growing threat.

Noble pushed the idea of setting up a network that would enable police anywhere in the world to immediately identify and obtain help from security researchers and investigators in other countries 24 hours a day. He also called for building up information shares called National Central Reference Points and connecting them using Interpol's secure global police communications system, known as I-24/7.

Olympics website hosting 'pirated' games

The Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee has removed a game from its official website after complaints that it was substantially copied from an independent US developer's work.

Other games which also appear similar to existing products remain on the site, however.

New York-based games developer Cadin Batrack claimed in a blog posting that "the Olympics stole my game".

Batrack highlighted what he claims are strong similarities between his Snow Day game, and a game on the Olympics website titled Fuwa Fight the Winter Clouds.

The Conservative Party has announced a range of measures aimed at tackling cyber-crime and tightening data protection in the UK.
